Uber agreed Thursday to a nearly $15 billion bid to acquire the German-based Delivery Hero, which will create the largest food-delivery group outside of China.
The transaction will double the number of markets where Uber offers mobility and delivery services, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a company statement. It will also create a “denser combined network” for couriers and drivers that will “drive higher order volumes.”
The acquisition would expand Uber Eats to 65 countries across Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia, all places Delivery Hero operates. Though the deal could face antitrust scrutiny, Delivery Hero’s supervisory board Chair Kristin Skogen Lund argued that it is the “right move.”
“The food delivery business is highly competitive and scale-dependent,” Lund said. “It is challenging to build from a European base, yet we have achieved an enormous amount over 15 years. Joining forces with a strong partner now is the right move for Delivery Hero to best secure its future competitiveness and ability to deliver value for all our stakeholders.”
Delivery Hero CEO Niklas Östberg said the company is excited about the deal and the “possibilities it offers.”
“Uber’s global mobility and delivery platform and our shared commitment to innovation make this the right partnership to build on Delivery Hero’s strengths in local food delivery and Quick Commerce, and to take our Everyday App strategy further for our customers,” Östberg said in Uber’s statement.
Founded in 2011, Delivery Hero grew to prominence following a series of acquisitions, though it retreated from some markets to focus on profits, Reuters reported. It is expected to keep its Berlin headquarters and workforce until at least 2029, with Uber committing to invest 2 billion euros in Germany through 2031.
The transaction is expected to be completed later in 2027.
Uber and DoorDash have become two of the world’s leading food delivery services outside of China, where the food delivery service Meituan reigns as a growing company that last year recorded a platform gross merchandise value of about $246.5 billion.
