There’s a new group of Mouseketeers.
“The Mickey Mouse Club” is eyeing a revival, as Disney+ has ordered a pilot for a reboot of the classic kids program. Originally launched in 1955 before undergoing several iterations, the show is responsible for discovering and launching young talent including Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera.
The new squad of youngsters anchoring the reboot pilot are “Camp Rock 3” cast members Hudson Stone, Casey Trotter and Brooklynn Pitts, as well as Erianthe Akaata (“Young Rock”), Scarlett London Diviney (“The Lion King”), Michael Cash (“Black Rabbit”), Yonas Kibreab (“Elio”), Varonica Mitchell, Kauani, Scarlett Grace Petty and Carter Barnes.
Production on the pilot begins this month in Los Angeles. It’s produced by Fullwell Entertainment with executive producers Ben Winston, Ashley Edens, Emma Conway Dave Piendak.
Should it be ordered to series, the reboot aims to serve as a showcase for young performers. Similar to past iterations, music will play a large role in the variety program.
“Mickey Mouse Club” was created by Walt Disney himself and originally started as a traveling live theater show. It first aired on ABC in 1955 and, after a brief run, became a syndication show in the 1970s. The most popular revival, known as “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club,” came in 1989 and aired on Disney Channel until 1996. A short-lived social media version dubbed “Club Mickey Mouse” was tested from 2017 to 2018.
This is the latest pilot order from Disney+, which recently announced a pilot for a series adaptation of the 2006 mermaid movie “Aquamarine” as well as a live-action version of the “Last Kids on Earth” book series.
Deadline broke the news.
