Daylight will allow officials to assess any damage from Thursday's strong quake off Te Anau.
The quake struck at 9.14pm, 40 kilometres north of Te Anau, sparking an evacuation warning for coastal areas, which was cancelled around half an hour later.
Shortly before 11.30pm, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said there had been no tsunami signals detected by Earth Sciences in the two hours following the event.
It says this shows there is no ongoing tsunami activity affecting the area and the threat had passed.
Speaking to RNZ's Nights on Thursday, Southland mayor Rob Scott said he had "heard so far everyone is all OK" but had been told there'd been "a bit of damage to houses in terms of cracking and the like".
