Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff (Ga.) chastised President Trump ahead of the latter’s speech on Thursday, after CBS News reported the president will allege Chinese meddling in U.S. elections.
“The world’s most famous sore loser will deliver a primetime presidential sour grapes address to pursue his six-year-old grievances about the 2020 election, while his war in the Middle East spirals out of control and the cost of living continues to rise for Americans across the country,” Ossoff told reporters on Capitol Hill, referring to the resumption of the war with Iran.
The Peach State Democrat noted he expects the president to “reheat debunked conspiracy theories” about the 2020 presidential election in his state, which Trump lost to former President Biden. The president has repeatedly claimed, falsely, that he defeated Biden in Georgia.
CBS News reported this week, citing sources familiar with the matter, that Trump will accuse China of compromising U.S. voter data during his address to the country at 9 p.m. EDT on Thursday. The president will also claim the CIA knew about the action and did not share it with him during his first term, the outlet reported.
Trump has long referred to the 2020 race, which he lost to Biden, as a “rigged” election. The president also infamously urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) in January 2021 to “find” enough votes to declare him the winner of the state — but Raffensperger resisted that request.
Days after the call between Trump and Raffensperger, Ossoff and Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) defeated then-incumbent GOP Sens. David Perdue (Ga.) and Kelly Loeffler (Ga.).
Their victories resulted in Democrats and Republicans splitting the Senate 50-50 for the first two years of Biden’s term, with former Vice President Kamala Harris serving as the tiebreaker on party-line votes.
Ossoff, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, warned the president against casting doubt on election results in Georgia, whether regarding the 2020 presidential race or he and Warnock’s victories in early 2021.
“If the president declares Georgia’s elections illegitimate, or if the president declares Georgia’s sitting United States senators illegitimate, he is declaring Georgia voters illegitimate,” he remarked.
