Allow Sheinelle Jones' Powerful Message About Body Image to Inspire You
Sheinelle Jones wants her kids to love the skin they're in.
The Today With Jenna & Sheinelle host—mom to son Kayin, 16, and 14-year-old fraternal twins Clara and Uche with late husband Uche Ojeh—shared a powerful message about body image and being a positive example for her kids.
"You know how you look in the mirror and you go, 'Ugh, I feel so fat today’? Or ‘Oh, my cheeks!'" Sheinelle asked her cohost Jenna Bush Hager on the July 15 episode of their Today hour. "Our daughters—and guys, boys too—are listening and watching."
"I noticed that she takes on a lot of my mannerisms," she added of Clara. "We even dress the same or we wear headbands. And so it goes to show even when you’re not saying it, they’re watching our behavior."
The 48-year-old emphasized that she's striving to model the behavior for her daughter.
"The way I want her to live is how I’m trying to live, right?" Sheinelle shared. "So I don’t want to look in the mirror and disparage the body that’s kept me healthy.”
And both Sheinelle and Jenna feel inspired by actress Tracee Ellis Ross, who has spoken about being a "chooser" in her love life, instead of the notion of "waiting to be saved," such as in fairytales.
Yet, for Jenna, who shares Mila, 13, Poppy, 10, and Hal, 6, with husband Henry Hager, stressed that the idea of being a "chooser" can go beyond relationships and can even be applied to other situations, including choosing where to attend high school or college.
"I have told my girls that," she explained, "because what it does is it empowers women to think about what they want, in everything, not just in romantic relationships. 'This is up to you. You’re the chooser.'"
And while Mila is only a tween, Jenna noted that it's "never too early" to have important conversations about making one's own choices.

As the cohosts continue to ensure that their kids grow up to be their most confident selves, they always make a point to celebrate their kids.
After all, Sheinelle honored her twins on their 14th birthday, sharing a sweet tribute to Clara and Uche.
"14 years ago today … our lives were forever changed. A two for one special!" she wrote in a July 10 Instagram carousel, which featured photos of her and her late husband's kids over the years. "In this second picture … I remember placing the twins at the foot of my hospital bed… staring at them in awe … in their little onesies. In the 5th picture, my husband had native wear made for their baby dedication at church; in the 9th pic... I remember their pre school graduation just like it was yesterday."
While the journalist can't believe she now has three kids in high school, she emphasized they will "always be my babies."
