CEBU CITY, Philippines — Once again, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid under a yellow alert for 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, July 17, as the shutdown of the region’s two largest coal-fired plants coincided with elevated evening demand. Available capacity stood at 2,725 megawatts against forecast peak demand of 2,495MW, NGCP said in its 8 a.m. advisory. In other words, operating margins fell short of the grid’s contingency requirement, triggering the alert.
