
BOLINAO, Pangasinan – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources turned over on Thursday a 62-footer Fiber Glass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Handline Boat to a group of marginal fishermen here that would enable them to fish in commercial waters.
The Barredo Fishermen Association (BFA) also received six auxiliary utility boats locally called pakura and handline fishing gear and other boat accessories from the Ilocos Region office of BFAR.

BFAR Ilocos director Remely Lachica said BFA is the first of four fisherfolk associations in Region I which will receive FRP landline boats and accessories. The three associations are from Ilocos Norte.

She said the P11 million commercial fishing boat would ensure that more than a hundred fishermen would have improved livelihoods, as they could operate far out to sea and contribute approximately 40 million tons of fish annually.
But Lachica cautioned association members not to operate in municipal waters (15 kilometers from shore), which is dedicated to municipal fishing boats.
She said a 5-day training will be conducted for the boat captain, a mechanic, and a crew on the operation and management of the boat and safety procedures.
BFA President Joven Caasi asked the agency to put up more payaws to make harvesting more efficient. Payaws are fish aggregating devices that attract and gather pelagic fish like tuna and round scad./coa
