The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Olabisi Onabanjo University branch, has hailed the outgoing Governing Council of the institution, led by Prof. Toyin Ashiru, for what it described as four years of industrial harmony, improved staff welfare and respect for university autonomy.
The union said the council, appointed four years ago by Governor Dapo Abiodun, contributed significantly to the stability and academic progress recorded by the university during its tenure.
The OOU ASUU Chairperson, Dr Ganiyu Yinusa, stated this in a statement made available to our correspondent on Thursday, marking the completion of the council’s tenure.
Yinusa said the council provided strategic leadership while respecting the statutory roles of the university management, Senate and other governing organs, a development he said strengthened accountability and administrative efficiency.
He said, “Over the past four years, Olabisi Onabanjo University has witnessed one of the most stable and progressive periods in its recent history.
“The university has enjoyed sustained industrial peace, uninterrupted academic activities, strengthened governance structures, improved staff welfare, enhanced institutional reputation and renewed public confidence.”
Yinusa attributed the achievements to the collaborative efforts of the Ogun State Government, the Governing Council, the university management and staff unions.

The ASUU chairperson particularly praised the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, describing it as one of the council’s major achievements.
He said, “One of the defining legacies of this Council has been its unwavering commitment to staff welfare. The seamless implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement without industrial action, protests or prolonged agitation remains one of the most outstanding achievements recorded during this administration.
“While many public universities across Nigeria experienced delays and uncertainty in implementing the agreement, Olabisi Onabanjo University distinguished itself through proactive engagement, mutual respect and a shared commitment by Government, Council, Management and ASUU to prioritise the welfare of staff.
“It is equally noteworthy that even before the implementation of the 2025 Agreement, Olabisi Onabanjo University had already established itself as one of Nigeria’s better-paying state universities. This sustained commitment to staff welfare has strengthened morale, enhanced productivity and contributed significantly to the prevailing atmosphere of industrial harmony across the university’s campuses.
“The assurance by the Council that agreements affecting our sister unions would equally be implemented immediately upon the release of the appropriate salary schedules by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission further reflects its enduring commitment to equity, justice and fairness for every category of university employee.
“The Ogun State Government equally deserves profound appreciation for creating an enabling environment within which the Governing Council and the university administration successfully discharged their responsibilities.”
He also commended the Ogun State Government for respecting the autonomy of the institution, saying the administration had allowed the university to discharge its statutory responsibilities without undue interference.
