The Federal government said it is partnering other African Countries to improve internet connectivity as over one billion Africans do not use internet connectivity despite massive broadband penetration.
Permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Engr. Nadungu Gagare who represented the minister, made the disclosure in Abuja on Thursday during the special session of the African Telecommunication Union (ATU) Administrative Council.
He affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the vision and objectives of the African Telecommunications Union, noting that regional cooperation is essential if Africa is to build a strong, inclusive and innovative digital economy.
He however identified that more work needed to be done as the continent is still lagging in terms of internet penetration.
“Africa has made significant progress in the ICT sector over the years. Mobile connectivity has grown, digital innovation is expanding rapidly, and governments are increasingly adopting digital technologies to improve public service delivery. However, many challenges remain.
“Millions of our citizens still lack reliable internet access, digital infrastructure is unevenly distributed, and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence require coordinated policies and sustained capacity building.
“Recent evidence gives this responsibility greater urgency. Almost one billion people in Africa do not use mobile internet despite living within broadband coverage. Infrastructure expansion must therefore be matched by affordability, suitable devices, digital skills, trust and local services. These challenges also present opportunities,” he said.
Speaking further, he noted that by working together through the ATU, Nigeria can develop common solutions, share experiences, attract investment, and ensure that no African country is left behind in the digital transformation journey development.
Also speaking, ATU Secretary General, Mr. John Omo said the session provides the council with an opportunity to conclude consideration of the critical issues that will be placed before the forthcoming conference.
He added that it is imperative for Africa to accelerate internet penetration as part of efforts to boost the Continent’s economy.
