The National Council on Skills (NCS) has reviewed and ratified the alignment of the mandates of the Nigeria Board for Technical Education (NABTE) and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to support Nigeria’s industrialisation.
This was made known on Thursday during a world press conference by ITF and NABTE in Abuja.
Director General of NBTE, Professor Idris M. Bugaje noted that the conflict between NABTE and ITF over the regulations of the Nigerian Skills Qualification Framework is over.
He said, “ITF is now in charge of the Nigerian Skills Qualification Framework and the regulation on the overall, while MBTE will limit itself to education, and educational institutions.”
Speaking further, he said, “That’s a major achievement, because in the past we were having a lot of media wars and battles and so on, you know, on the role of each one of us in the NSQF. Now it has been transferred to the ITF. Number two, the Secretariat of the National Council on skills is now the ITF.
“They will coordinate the entire activities of the National Council on Skills, chaired by Mr. Vice President. The Secretariat of the World Skills Nigeria has also been moved from NABTE to the ITF, because world skills, you know, need to be linked to industry. We are not just doing skills training in our institutions but based on the needs of industry. And for that reason, that has been moved to the ITF. And I’m very happy to announce that the DG has not only accepted that role, he has also agreed to establish the World Skills Academy here in Abuja,” he added.
Also speaking, Director General of the ITF, Dr. Afiz Ogun said the ITF has now established a World Skills Academy for artisans to achieve world-class training in their areas of trade and go back to their institutions to impart that knowledge on their students, noting that it is another major area of collaboration.
“The ITF has also agreed to promote the Nigerian Skills Qualification Certification which will allow Nigerians to take jobs beyond the borders of Nigeria, outside. Trainees will do the Nigerian Skills Qualification Certification, and then they will do the international certification.
“The Nigerian Skills Qualification Certification is important because we are promoting our own. While the international one will give our young people the opportunity to travel beyond the borders of Nigeria and take up jobs. Besides that, it will also facilitate this agreement we have signed in the office of the Vice President.
“We’ll facilitate better collaboration between our two agencies for our student work industrial skills, and SIWES which is very important for us to train Nigerians graduates with hands-on skills,” he added.
