The police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have launched an investigation after a woman, simply identified as Mercy, was accused of forcibly cutting off a portion of her neighbour’s daughter’s hair during a dispute in Bwari Area Council.
The incident, which occurred in the Kogo area of Bwari town, has sparked anxiety among residents following allegations that the suspect fled with the girl’s hair after threatening the victim.
The victim’s mother, who reported the matter to the Bwari Divisional Police Station, told Abuja Metro on Thursday that the incident stemmed from an earlier misunderstanding she had with the suspect.
According to her, the disagreement escalated when the suspect allegedly slapped her.
“My daughter arrived at the scene and tried to intervene, but the woman, together with some other ladies, turned on her. They held her down, and the suspect, identified as Mercy, brought out a pair of scissors and cut part of her hair,” she alleged.
She said the suspect fled immediately after the incident, allegedly taking the cut hair with her.
“All efforts to locate her and recover the hair proved unsuccessful, so we reported the matter to the police,” she said.
The woman further alleged that the suspect had threatened to “teach her daughter a lesson” using the hair she took.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the alleged threat had heightened fear in the neighbourhood.
“The suspect reportedly boasted that she would show the victim where she comes from and warned that she would use the hair to deal with her,” the source said.
Abuja Metro gathered that police arrested two women, identified as Nnenna and Helen, for allegedly harbouring the suspect at a brothel in the area and failing to produce her when requested.
The two women were later released on bail after spending a night in police custody, with a directive to produce the suspect on or before Monday.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bwari Division, CSP Babayola Muhammad Musa, confirmed the incident, saying investigations are ongoing.
