Two juvenile bats have been rescued in Gozo after they were found grounded, with the recent extreme heat believed to be the reason they were unable to take flight.
The young bats were discovered in Għajnsielem and Victoria before being taken into the care of Nature Trust Malta’s Wildlife Rescue Team.
To help them regain their strength, the tiny mammals were treated to a meal of worms before they begin their journey back to the wild.
“Bats are fascinating and incredibly important members of Malta’s wildlife, helping to keep insect populations under control every single night,” Nature Trust Malta said.
The organisation explained that, while the bats are safe in its care for now, every meal brings them one step closer to returning to the night skies.
Nature Trust Malta also reassured the public that there is no known local transmission of rabies in Malta, urging people not to fear bats.
Anyone who comes across an injured or distressed bat or other wild animal is encouraged to contact the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta rather than attempting to keep the animal, as it is illegal to keep bats as pets.
