Peppi Azzopardi has called on the government to take urgent action over what he described as extreme heat conditions inside Corradino Correctional Facility.
In a social media post, Azzopardi pointed out that while the government has been urging the public to protect themselves and one another during the ongoing heatwave, he says prisoners are enduring severe temperatures without the same attention.
He claimed that some inmates had even lost consciousness because of the heat and appealed directly to Prime Minister Robert Abela.
“Prime Minister, on behalf of the prisoners’ families, I am holding you responsible for addressing this humanitarian situation urgently. Now,” he wrote.
Azzopardi also praised awareness campaigns encouraging people to care for animals during the heatwave, but urged the public not to forget that “there are our fellow human beings in prison too.”
His comments come as Malta remains under a red heat warning, with temperatures expected to reach 40°C to 41°C over the coming days.
