Momentum General Secretary Mark Camilleri Gambin has criticised the recent power cuts affecting several localities across Malta, arguing that access to electricity during a heatwave is far from a “first world problem”.
Reacting to outages reported in areas including Qawra, St Julian’s, Sliema, Swieqi, Mellieħa, Manikata, Mġarr, Rabat and Qormi, Camilleri Gambin wrote:
“With all our ‘luxury’, ‘First World Problems’ suddenly refers to some very basic needs… so much for wellbeing, mental health, etc.”
His comments come as residents reported repeated power cuts over the past week, with some saying they had to throw away spoiled food, replace damaged appliances and endure sleepless nights without electricity.
The remarks also follow Prime Minister Robert Abela’s recent comments about more people being able to enjoy “luxuries” such as cars, boats and travel abroad.
The outages come as Malta braces for its hottest weekend of the year, with temperatures expected to reach 41°C and a red heat warning in effect.
