Attacks on shopkeepers are a matter
of police prevention and control and citizens cannot take the
law into their own hands, magistrates union ANM said after
jeweler Mario Roggero got almost 15 years in jail for shooting
dead two fleeing robbers near Cuneo in 2021.
"Beyond the specific judicial case of Mario Roggero, the issue
of attacks and violence against shopkeepers or in the homes of
private citizens obviously cannot be underestimated, but this,
if anything, pertains to crime prevention and territorial
control," said ANM President Giuseppe Tango.
"I would like to point out that the law already provides for the
sacrosanct principle of self-defense, but it cannot tolerate
private revenge. To say otherwise is to undermine the
foundations of the rule of law, and those representing the
institutions should be well aware of this."
Right-wing parties are calling for Roggero to be pardoned
because he allegedly acted in self-defence when he pursued the
pair of robbers and virtually executed them.
