Justice Minister Carlo Nordio on

Friday launched an investigation aimed at President Sergio

Mattarella potentially granting a pardon to Mario Roggero, a a

72-year-old Piedmontese jeweler sentenced to 14 years and nine

months in jail for killing two fleeing robbers outside his shop

near Cuneo in 2021 and whose clemency cause has been taken up by

right-wing parties.

The case has been sent to the Prosecutor's Office of the Turin

Court of Appeals.

The magistrates will now be tasked with gathering all

documentation, the opinions of the Surveillance Court, and

Roggero's judicial history.

Nordio will assess the results of the probe and then may send a

pardon request to Mattarella, who has the sole power to grand

pardons in Italy.
