EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures is ready to lose its head over the hot package Hollow, as the studio has landed the new retelling of the Sleepy Hollow tale starring Sydney Sweeney. Based on Lindsey Anderson Beer‘s debut novel, the project will be directed, produced and adapted by Beer, with LuckyChap and Sweeney’s Honey Trap banner also producing.
Deadline first broke news about the package last month and also that the novel would be published by Putnam, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in fall 2027. Sources say Sony came in fast and hard to take it off the table for the star in a competitive situation.
Hollow is Honey Trap’s first film it will produce. The newly launched company with Kaylee McGregor serving as President of Production and Development recently inked a first-look deal with Sony Pictures.
Beer’s novel is a reimagining of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, told through the perspective of Katrina Van Tassel. Reframing one of literature’s most iconic heroines, the novel positions Van Tassel not as a romantic prize but as the central figure in a dangerous mystery and seductive supernatural love triangle. The story blends gothic atmosphere, psychological intrigue and erotic thriller elements into a contemporary, high-concept reinvention.
Alexandra Banks and Spencer Walken will executive produce for Beer’s Lab Brew banner.
The material aligns closely with all parties’ mandates and visions, leading to Sweeney, Honey Trap and LuckyChap all committing in record time.
Sony has gotten right into casting the romantic triangle of the iconic characters Brom Bones and Ichabod Crane, now one of the hottest open castings in town.
On the publishing side, following the massive preempt by Putnam, translation rights to the book have sold around the world, with record offers from some territories. It’s a rare feat for a novel at launch, especially a debut.
Sweeney has had a long-standing relationship with Sony Pictures, having executive produced and starred opposite Glen Powell in the hit Anyone But You, which grossed over $210 million worldwide at the box office. She was last seen opposite Amanda Seyfried in Lionsgate’s adaptation of the bestselling novel The Housemaid, with the film grossing nearly $400 million worldwide and scoring a greenlight for a sequel. She also recently led the film Christy in the title role of Christy Martin. it was directed by David Michôd for Black Bear Pictures, with Sweeney also producing.
Beer wrote and directed 2023’s Pet Sematary: Bloodlines and wrote and executive produced Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. Pet Sematary: Bloodlines debuted No. 1 and broke a Paramount+ record for most-watched film after premiering at Fantastic Fest. Sierra Burgess Is a Loser debuted No. 1 globally on Netflix in 2018, and its original song “Sunflower,” also penned by Beer, made the Billboard charts.
Beer is a go-to writer, director, and producer known for building worlds and character- and author-driven takes on big-hook ideas.
Sweeney is repped by Brillstein and Hansen Jacobson. Beer is repped by Brillstein, WME, and Gang Tyre Ramer. LuckyChap is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360 and attorney Jeff Bernstein.
