Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has played an active role in the establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) as a strategic platform for international cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI).
"From Indonesia's perspective, WAICO is not merely a consultative forum but an integral part of global AI governance and equitable technology transfer," Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Angga Raka Prabowo said in a statement on Saturday.
According to Angga, Indonesia's commitment is aligned with the country's national AI policy framework currently under development.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is finalizing the regulatory framework for the 2026–2029 Indonesia Artificial Intelligence Roadmap, along with national AI Ethics Guidelines.
The two policy instruments will serve as the foundation for AI development and utilization in Indonesia, emphasizing human-centered innovation, transparency, accountability, personal data protection, security, and responsible AI governance.
Following the signing of the agreement establishing WAICO, the deputy minister attended the Informal Preparatory Session for the organization in Shanghai on Friday (July 17), which brought together representatives from 26 countries.
During the meeting, Indonesia proposed three priority areas for cooperation under WAICO, research development and technology transfer, knowledge sharing on smart city development, and digital talent development.
In addition, the Indonesian delegation emphasized three foundational principles to ensure the organization benefits the broader global interest.
First, Indonesia stressed that global AI governance should be translated into concrete actions by narrowing the digital divide through affordable financing, technology transfer, sound data governance, and capacity building.
"AI cooperation must deliver tangible benefits, support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), preserve local languages, and address the needs of developing countries," Angga emphasized.
Second, Indonesia supports responsible AI innovation through a risk-based regulatory approach that reflects each country's respective national context.
Third, Indonesia encouraged close coordination between WAICO and the United Nations' multilateral framework to prevent fragmentation and duplication of global AI governance efforts.
"Through this active participation, Indonesia is ready to contribute to the establishment of WAICO and hopes the organization will become an inclusive platform that strengthens global collaboration and promotes AI applications that deliver tangible benefits to society," he said.
