Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has pledged continued support for graduates of schools under the tuition-free Sekolah Rakyat program, including assistance to pursue higher education and secure decent employment at home or abroad.
Deputy Minister of Social Affairs Agus Jabo Priyono conveyed the pledge during a dialogue with 262 Sekolah Rakyat students attending an orientation program in Semarang City, Central Java, on Friday (July 17).
“Mr. President wants you to build strong confidence; that’s the first. Indonesian children should not lag behind peers from other countries. Secondly, you must grow into smart children,” he remarked, as cited in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday.
Priyono stressed that self-confidence is key for children to excel and break the cycle of poverty through education.
He also conveyed the president's message urging Sekolah Rakyat students to develop strong character, foster nationalism, and cultivate sensitivity and concern for their communities and surroundings.
The deputy minister further emphasized the importance of discipline in preparing students to face future challenges.
President Prabowo, he continued, envisions Sekolah Rakyat students growing into skilled individuals in the future.
To that end, he said the Ministry of Social Affairs would continue assisting Sekolah Rakyat beneficiaries even after graduation in upgrading their academic and non-academic competencies.
He went on to say that the government expects Sekolah Rakyat schools to become a second home for children from poor and extremely poor families, where they can pursue education, build social networks, and prepare to shape a better future.
Abi Alfian, 16, voiced his delight at being able to continue education through Sekolah Rakyat. He appreciated the program for easing the financial burden on his low-income family.
“Thank you, Mr. President. Thanks to you, I can pursue education here,” he said.
The school orientation period at Sekolah Rakyat Semarang began on July 13, involving 87 elementary pupils, 88 junior high students, and 87 others at the senior high level.
