President Trump on Friday doubled down on his accusations of widespread voter fraud and interference by China in the 2020 presidential election in a series of social media posts.
Trump delivered a highly anticipated primetime address to the nation on Thursday, in which he unveiled his administration compiled new proof that the 2020 election, which he lost to former President Biden, had been “stolen.”
The trove of files released by the White House in conjunction with the 20-minute speech did not produce major revelatory weaknesses in the U.S. election system, according to several independent experts.
The president revived the unsubstantiated claims late Friday, writing in one Truth Social post that they contain proof that the People’s Republic of China “carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history” and alleged that Beijing illegally acquired 220 million U.S. voter files.
“This data loss presents an unprecedented election security nightmare,” Trump continued in his post. “The intelligence even shows that China assigned a data exploitation unit specifically to this new project.”
Experts point out that China’s efforts to collect U.S. data have been known for years and that voter data can be freely acquired online. Additionally, the White House documents suggest that the country used this data primarily to predict elections, not to manipulate votes.
China has also pushed back on the claims. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the U.S. in September, and concerns have been raised about how the fraud allegations could impact that trip.
Trump, in a second post, repeated his argument that the election system “falls catastrophically short,” of standards and that declassified documents reveal “shocking vulnerabilities.”
“This evidence shows that the election system we have is dangerously exposed to hacking, exploitation, and foreign interference,” the president wrote, pulled from the speech transcript. “Just as disturbingly, this vital information has for many years been covered up and hidden from you, the American People, and that changes right now.”
Since Trump’s election to a second term, he has directed his administration to launch investigations into the results of the 2020 election. Earlier this year, the FBI raided an elections center in Fulton County, Ga., and seized voter rolls.
The county is at the heart of the president’s allegations of voter fraud.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis indicted Trump and 18 others in 2023 on racketeering charges, alleging they conspired to undermine the results of the 2020 election. The case was ultimately dropped following Trump’s reelection.
Following the president’s address this week, Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff (D) warned that Trump was “clearly signaling his intent to attack” the upcoming midterm elections.
“He is signaling his plans to come right here to Georgia, attack the election and undermine voting rights,” Ossoff told MS NOW. “And I’m asking folks to take action right now.”
