Two U.S. service members were killed, and one is still missing after Iran hit two military bases in Jordan on Friday, according to U.S. Central Command (Centcom).
Additionally, four American service members were “medically evacuated” to hospitals in Jordan and have since been discharged.
Other troops who sustained minor injuries were evaluated and have returned to duty, Centcom said in a statement shared on social media Saturday afternoon.
“Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM will withhold additional information, including the identities of the fallen warriors, until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified,” the agency wrote.
The U.S. and Iran have launched tit-for-tat strikes against one another in recent weeks over alleged breaches of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last month, which initiated a temporary ceasefire amid negotiations.
President Trump has previously indicated his administration has no plan to renew talks at this time.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) responded to Centcom’s statement in a social media post on Saturday afternoon.
“Praying for the loved ones of these brave fallen American heroes, for the swift recovery of those injured, and for the safe return of the missing service member,” he wrote. “May God bless our brave men and women in uniform.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also acknowledged the news.
“Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve,” he wrote on social media.
Tehran has threatened a wider war if U.S. strikes do not end. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei blamed the U.S. for “repeated breaches” of this ceasefire agreement in a social media post on Saturday.
“The repeated breaches of the agreement by the Great Satan [the US] regarding the MOU signed by the Presidents of Iran and the US have once again laid bare a fundamental truth: the signature of the US President is utterly worthless and devoid of credibility,” he said.
Khamanei ramped up threats against the U.S. in a follow-up post.
“Now that the American enemy is seeking to escalate the conflict thereby incurring even heavier costs and further humiliation, it should know that the noble nation of Iran and the Resistance Front have unforgettable lessons in store for it,” he wrote.
The Iranian leader, who took the reins after joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Tehran in late February killed his father, has not given public remarks since stepping into the role.
