A petition calling for stricter fireworks safety regulations has gathered more than 2,200 signatures in the days following Monday’s explosion at the Lourdes Fireworks Factory in Naxxar.
The petition, launched by engineer Elfrem Borg, urges the government to review the laws governing the manufacture, storage, transport and use of fireworks across Malta and Gozo. Importantly, Borg says the initiative is not aimed at banning fireworks.
Instead, he argues that Malta should preserve one of its most cherished traditions while introducing stronger safeguards to protect people, animals and surrounding communities.
Among the proposals outlined in the petition are stricter inspections, enhanced safety requirements and the creation of an independent regulator dedicated to overseeing the industry.
The petition also raises concerns about the growing intensity and duration of fireworks displays, suggesting that increasing competition between fireworks clubs is encouraging larger and more elaborate shows.
Borg argues that a more balanced approach is needed, with greater emphasis placed on safety and sustainability while still respecting Malta’s festa culture.
The petition also proposes exploring alternatives that could complement traditional fireworks, including low-noise pyrotechnics, drone displays, laser shows and other technologies.
As discussions continue around the future of Malta’s fireworks industry, the petition is quickly becoming one of the most visible calls for reform to emerge following the incident.
Can Malta make fireworks safer without losing the tradition?
