Following Monday’s fireworks factory explosion in Naxxar, a Maltese software engineer decided to find out exactly where Malta’s fireworks factories are located.
Simon Agius Muscat created a map plotting fireworks manufacturing sites across the islands after the blast at the Lourdes Fireworks Factory raised fresh questions about safety and proximity to residential areas.
What he found caught him off guard.
After checking the map, Agius Muscat realised that another fireworks factory is located even closer to his home than the one that exploded earlier this week.
In a post on LinkedIn, he explained that he initially thought the explosion was either fireworks or election celebrations before realising something far more serious had happened when the force of the blast reached nearby homes.
He said the experience led him to look into the actual risk profile of fireworks factories and how close some of them are to residential areas.
Agius Muscat also raised the question of whether insurance companies could eventually start factoring proximity to fireworks factories into their risk assessments and premiums.
The map comes as questions continue to be raised about fireworks safety following Monday’s explosion, which damaged nearby properties, injured two farmers and killed several animals.
Should fireworks factories be located further away from residential areas?
