The family of Nigeria’s late former Head of State, Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, has paid glowing tribute to the late Francis Adekunle Fajuyi, describing his death as a heroic and selfless sacrifice that remains one of the most enduring symbols of loyalty, courage and national unity in Nigeria’s history.
In a remembrance message marking the 60th anniversary of Fajuyi’s death, the Aguiyi-Ironsi family said July 29, 2026, presents a solemn opportunity to honour a soldier whose commitment to duty and national cohesion transcended ethnic and regional considerations.
The tribute was conveyed in a letter written on behalf of the family by Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, a former Minister of Defence and son of the late Head of State, to the Fajuyi family.

According to the family, Fajuyi’s actions during the events of July 1966 represented the highest ideals of military honour and personal integrity. They recalled that Fajuyi, then Military Governor of the Western Region, was abducted alongside Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi in Ibadan during the military counter-coup that led to their deaths.
The family noted that despite having opportunities to distance himself from the unfolding crisis, Fajuyi chose to remain with his guest and superior officer, refusing to abandon him in the face of danger.
They described the decision as a defining moment in Nigeria’s history, one that elevated Fajuyi to the status of a national martyr and a lasting symbol of courage, loyalty and selfless service.
“His sacrifice remains one of the finest examples of honour and patriotism in our national history,” the family stated, adding that his conduct continues to inspire generations of Nigerians to place national interest above personal considerations.
The Aguiyi-Ironsi family also expressed sympathy with the Fajuyi family, acknowledging the pain and loss they have endured over the decades while praying for continued strength, comfort and peace for his descendants.
They further appreciated Nigerians, institutions and individuals who have continued to honour Fajuyi’s memory, saying such gestures demonstrate that the sacrifices of true patriots are never forgotten.
Reflecting on the late military officer’s final moments, the family stated: “He did not run. He did not hide. He chose to stand. In that sacrificial decision lay the essence of his greatness.”
The family called on government institutions, military authorities and custodians of Nigeria’s historical heritage to sustain efforts aimed at preserving and promoting Fajuyi’s legacy. They stressed that honouring his memory is a collective national responsibility.
They also urged Nigerians to draw lessons from his life and sacrifice, noting that his example continues to challenge citizens to embrace unity, courage, honour and service to the nation.
Lt. Col. Fajuyi was killed on July 29, 1966, alongside Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi during the military counter-coup in Ibadan, an event that remains one of the most significant turning points in Nigeria’s political history.
