Summer is fast approaching and temperatures in Malta are already hovering around the 30°C mark, prompting renewed warnings about the risks hot weather poses to pets, particularly dogs.
While daily walks remain important for a dog’s physical and mental wellbeing, animal welfare advocates are reminding owners that warmer temperatures can quickly become dangerous and significantly increase the risk of heatstroke.
Dogs are far less efficient at cooling themselves down than humans, meaning they can overheat much faster, especially during exercise.
Generally, walks are considered safest when temperatures are below 19°C. Once temperatures rise above 20°C, activities should be kept light and closely monitored. Beyond 23°C, the risk of overheating increases substantially and owners are advised to avoid walks wherever possible.
Pet owners are also being reminded to check the temperature of the ground before heading outside. Surfaces such as asphalt, concrete and sand can become hot enough to burn a dog’s paws, even when the air temperature feels manageable.
A simple rule of thumb is to place your hand on the ground for 10 seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.
Early mornings and later evenings are the safest options. Choosing shaded routes and areas with access to water can also help reduce the risk of overheating.
Owners should pay close attention to their pets’ behaviour, as many dogs will continue playing and exercising despite becoming dangerously overheated. Excessive panting, unusual tiredness and lethargy can all be signs that a dog is struggling with the heat.
Heatstroke remains one of the most serious risks during summer and can become life-threatening if not treated quickly. Experts are urging owners to assess both the weather conditions and their pet’s health before heading outdoors.
Adequate hydration is equally important. Pets should always have access to fresh, clean drinking water, particularly if they are left alone for extended periods of time.
With summer just around the corner and temperatures already climbing, animal lovers are being encouraged to take extra precautions and ensure their furry companions stay cool, comfortable and safe throughout the hotter months.
