The Zamfara State Government says reforms introduced by Governor Dauda Lawal over the last three years have significantly improved healthcare infrastructure, workforce welfare and access to medical services across the state.
According to the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, the administration inherited a healthcare system weakened by years of neglect, with inadequate equipment and shortage of medical personnel.
She said one of the major interventions was the upgrade of Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, which now boasts modern diagnostic equipment, including MRI and CT scan machines as well as endoscopy facilities.

She added that improved remuneration and welfare packages for health workers had helped attract and retain medical professionals in the state.
According to her, all public hospitals in the state are now staffed with qualified doctors, while outstanding retirement benefits owed to healthcare workers and other civil servants have been settled.
The commissioner also noted that the Ministry of Health had undergone extensive renovation, with the provision of office equipment and internet facilities to improve efficiency.
On healthcare financing, she said the Zamfara State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (ZAMCHEMA) had enrolled more than 300,000 beneficiaries, including civil servants and vulnerable persons, thereby reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses.
She further said the government had strengthened partnerships with development organisations, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF and ACASUS, to support healthcare delivery in the state.
The administration, she added, had also upgraded the ZAMCHEMA toll-free call centre to improve feedback and complaint resolution mechanisms for residents.
She maintained that the interventions had strengthened healthcare delivery and expanded access to affordable medical services across the state.
