Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported damage to at least 27 homes and two churches in North Sulawesi Province following a magnitude-7.7 tectonic earthquake on Monday morning.
BNPB Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Head Abdul Muhari noted that data as of 12:30 p.m. Jakarta time showed quake-induced damage in residential areas across two archipelagic regions in the province.
“There are 27 households affected, comprising 20 families in Sangihe Islands District and seven others in Talaud Islands District. In addition, we have recorded 27 damaged homes in the two regions,” he stated in Jakarta.
Muhari added that BNPB had confirmed impacts on several public infrastructures in North Minahasa District, including two churches, one school, one teacher’s official residence, and another building.
He further said that, lasting about four seconds, a potent tremor triggered mass panic across the Sangihe Islands, particularly in the sub-districts of Marore, Central Tabukan, South Tabukan, Central South Tabukan, Tahuna, and West Tahuna.
Meanwhile, quakes lasting two to four seconds with low to medium intensity were felt in Rainis Subdistrict, Talaud Islands; West Likupang Subdistrict, North Minahasa; and the provincial capital, Manado.
Muhari underscored that the data was still being updated, noting that local disaster mitigation agencies had dispatched quick response teams to conduct comprehensive assessments.
He also highlighted the now-lifted tsunami warning, urging residents to remain vigilant against aftershocks and potential hazards from damaged structures.
“Residents whose homes are damaged are advised to remain cautious and apprise local authorities of buildings that seem to be in a dangerous state,” Muhari told the public.
He also urged residents to stay calm, avoid unverified information, and refer solely to official data provided by BNPB, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and local governments.
