A TikTok video posted by an Italian tourist has reignited Malta’s long-running debate about overcrowding at Comino after showing the island packed with visitors.
The video, which is currently doing the rounds on Maltese TikTok and has racked up almost 140,000 views, shows hundreds of people gathered around the Blue Lagoon and surrounding areas, with barely any visible space left on the shoreline.
“The truth about Malta that no one tells you is that Comino is beautiful but there’s no room to breathe,” the tourist says in the video.
The footage quickly struck a chord with local viewers, many of whom have voiced concerns in recent years about the growing number of visitors descending on the island every summer.
While Comino remains one of Malta’s most iconic tourist attractions thanks to its crystal-clear waters and picturesque landscapes, scenes of overcrowding have become increasingly common during the busiest months of the year.
The video even caught the attention of the Malta Ranger Unit, which weighed in on the debate in the comments section. Referring to Comino’s protected status, the organisation wrote: “And this is a BIRD Sanctuary… the government shows zero respect to nature.”
The comment quickly gained traction among viewers, adding fuel to ongoing concerns about the environmental impact of mass tourism on one of Malta’s most ecologically sensitive sites.
What do you make of the situation?
