Local content creator Kurt Meli has responded to comments by PN politician Conrad Borg Manche, who argued that Pride no longer makes sense because the LGBTQ+ community has achieved legal equality and widespread social acceptance in Malta.
Kurt acknowledged that he personally experienced little discrimination growing up gay in Malta, but stressed that his experience is not universal.
He argued that while significant progress has been made, there are still people who oppose LGBTQ+ rights, including the right to marry or simply exist openly. For that reason, he said, other people’s opinions should never determine what rights someone deserves.
According to Kurt, Pride remains relevant because it serves as a reminder that hard-won rights should never be taken for granted.
Pride is a reminder that what has been written shouldn’t be erased, he argued, adding that discrimination is not something that disappears overnight but something society must continue to confront whenever it emerges.
Drawing a comparison with national celebrations such as Victory Day, Kurt said Pride is not about fighting the same battles year after year, but about commemorating past struggles while celebrating a country that continues to stand against discrimination.
What do you make of his argument?
