Broadcaster and activist Peppi Azzopardi has weighed in on the debate surrounding Pride after PN politician Conrad Borg Manche stated that Pride events are no longer necessary in Malta.
In a social media post, Azzopardi said he “absolutely” disagrees with Borg Manche’s position, but argued that the reaction to the comments has been blown out of proportion.
Azzopardi pointed to remarks by Judge Wenzu Mintoff, who in a recent judgment said he was disgusted by the treatment of foreign workers in Malta.
According to Azzopardi, while Borg Manche’s comments sparked widespread discussion and criticism, Mintoff’s observations about the exploitation of foreign workers passed with little public reaction.
“It’s as if nothing happened,” Azzopardi suggested, questioning why one issue generated significant debate while the other attracted far less attention.
He went on to criticise Malta’s economic model, arguing that it relies heavily on the exploitation of vulnerable workers. In a particularly blunt remark, Azzopardi said authorities would continue ignoring these issues “as long as the government can keep celebrating an economy built on the treatment of slaves within a capitalist system”.
The comments come amid an ongoing public debate about the purpose of Pride in Malta, with Azzopardi using the discussion to draw attention to what he sees as another form of discrimination that deserves equal scrutiny.
