Former MEP Cyrus Engerer has defended the importance of Pride in Malta following ongoing political debate surrounding the event and LGBTQ visibility.
In a statement shared online, Engerer said he was glad that Robert Abela, Alex Borg and Sandra Gauci all support Pride and attend the event.
“Pride means a young person in Malta grows up knowing there is nothing to hide,” Engerer wrote.
He added that Pride also represents “the rights we won are rights we will keep,” while paying tribute to early LGBTQ activists who marched “when there were fifty of them and when it carried a cost.”
Engerer described Pride as “joy in the open” and said LGBTQ people should be able to celebrate their identity publicly, just as other communities and traditions are celebrated across Malta.
“There will always be those who would rather we left the streets and went quiet. There always have been. We are not going anywhere,” he concluded.
Malta Pride celebrations are expected to take place again this September.
