Gracie Abrams Worried "Stable" Paul Mescal Romance Would Threaten Her Writing

Gracie Abrams was worried she’d hit a wall when she fell in love with Paul Mescal.

While her romance with the Normal People actor is still going strong two years after they first stepped out together, the “Close to You” singer admitted it initially sparked some internal anxiety about how their relationship might affect her music career.

“I was worried feeling secure and stable was threatening my drive to write music,” Abrams told Vogue in an interview published June 9. “It freaked me out.”

Obviously, the 26-year-old figured it out—her third studio album Daughter from Hell drops next month—and her relationship with Mescal has only deepened in the time since. In fact, the Grammy nominee detailed how inspiring it was to live with her boyfriend while he was filming Hamnet.

“It feels like every day you come home and read the greatest book ever,” she recalled. “That’s what it’s like to be in conversation with someone making something like that.”

And the “That’s So True” singer was especially grateful the 30-year-old was working with director Chloé Zhao and Jessie Buckley—the latter of whom  took home an Oscar for her performance as Agnes—lovingly referring to the spellbinding vibes they provided on set.

“The person you love gets to be surrounded by witches,” Abrams explained. “It’s magical.”

But the pair’s relationship works both ways: Not only did the Aftersun star buy Abrams a 1960s reel-to-reel recorder and helped her use it, but he’s also started to jam with her as he prepares to play Paul McCartney in the upcoming Beatles biopics.

When it comes to his capabilities on the guitar, Abrams mused her boyfriend is “so much better than I’ve ever been.”

The couple aren’t on an island, either. Abrams revealed her younger brother August Abrams was living at their shared London apartment during his semester abroad, and Mescal is hoping her dachshund Weenie—who has been stuck in LA due to animal travel restrictions—will join them soon. As she joked, “Paul is desperate to get him out to London.”
