
TACLOBAN CITY — A 14-year-old girl sustained injuries after an amusement ride collapsed during a fiesta celebration in Matag-ob, Leyte on Friday evening, June 12.
Police identified the victim only as “Nina,” a resident of Matag-ob, Leyte. She suffered minor physical injuries after the amusement ride, locally known as the “Balangay,” suddenly gave way at around 9 p.m. in Sitio Bonoy Gamay, Barangay Bonoy.
According to a spot report from the Matag-ob Municipal Police Station (MPS), the incident was reported by the victim’s legal guardian, “Lita,” 51, a housewife from Matag-ob, who personally appeared at the police station together with the injured minor.

Initial investigation showed that the “Balangay” ride was carrying about 20 passengers when its main support beam or welding joint reportedly snapped, causing the entire structure to collapse to the ground.
The victim sustained injuries from the impact, while the other passengers escaped unharmed, police said.
Personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office immediately transported the injured teenager to the Rural Health Unit of Matag-ob for initial treatment. She was later referred to OSPA Hospital in Ormoc City for further medical evaluation and treatment.
The amusement ride is owned by “Rodel,” a businessman and resident of Barugo, Leyte.

Authorities said the Matag-ob MPS is conducting a deeper investigation to determine the exact cause of the structural failure and assess the ride owner’s possible liability.
