Vietnamese to have 5-day break for National Day

Vietnam's National Day holiday will last five days, from Aug. 29 to Sept. 2, the Ministry of Home Affairs has announced.

In addition to the two official public holiday days and the regular weekend, civil servants and public employees will take Monday (Aug 31), off and instead work on Saturday (Aug 22), of the preceding week to compensate for the extended break.

State agencies are required to arrange on-duty staff to ensure continued public services and to handle any unexpected matters. For those organizations that do not follow a fixed weekend schedule, holiday leave should be arranged in accordance with their specific operational plans.

Vietnam currently has 11 official public holidays, including one day for New Year's Day, five days for the Lunar New Year, one day for the Hung Kings Commemoration Day, two days for Reunification Day and International Labor Day (April 30-May 1), and two days for National Day.

The ministry has also proposed designating Nov. 24 as "Vietnam Culture Day," which would be a fully paid day off to promote cultural development.

If this new holiday is approved, the total would increase to 12 days, spread across six holiday periods throughout the year.
