California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Monday that President Trump directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate him and his wife after months of intense feuds between the two on social media and in public remarks.
“He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President,” Newsom wrote in a post on social platform X, in reference to Trump.
“He hates that I consistently call him out. He is simply the most corrupt President in American history. We have nothing to hide,” he added.
Newsom said federal agents have interviewed his family, friends and former employees in addition to requesting records from his office while taking a similar approach with his wife, Jennifer.
“If they can’t intimidate me, they’ll go after the mother of our children. Donald Trump picked the wrong target. We have nothing to hide,” Newsom said in a clip attached to his post on X.
“His political operatives can take every record and read every page. But they’ll be looking in the wrong place. Because if they really want to find corruption, look no further than 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,” he added.
The White House referred The Hill’s request for comment to the DOJ, which did not immediately respond to an email inquiry.
Last year, Trump and Newsom clashed over the Golden State’s response to annual wildfires and over immigration enforcement in Los Angeles.
The president endorsed the arrest of Newsom, whom he has repeatedly described as “grossly incompetent.”
Newsom said the DOJ investigation was politically motivated and highlighted similar efforts against former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, New York Attorney General Letitia James, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) and others.
“Donald Trump is simply the most corrupt president in American history. He’s turned the levers of government into his own personal power ministries to reward cronies and to try to jail his opponents. His personal attorney now runs the Department of Justice, which has repeatedly gone after his political enemies,” Newsom said, referring to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
“Ask Jerome Powell. Sent them after James Comey, Tish James, Adam Schiff. He sent them after Tim Walz. And a woman that a jury found Donald Trump had sexually abused. One by one, anyone who has challenged Donald Trump has ended up on his hit list. And today, I proudly join that list,” he continued.
The California governor later added, “You can harass me. Put my name on every and any enemies list you have. But leave my wife and family out of your personal vendetta.”
A source told NewsNation that Trump didn’t spark the investigation, but whistleblowers reported concerns to the DOJ office in Sacramento.
