EXCLUSIVE: Live Nation Studios has commenced the SoCal production of Youth Juice, a new horror-comedy starring Gideon Adlon (Euphoria), Luna Blaise (Jurassic World), Simon Rex (Red Rocket) and Jay Hernandez (Magnum P.I.).
Written by Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, two of the scribes behind Netflix’s Academy Award winner KPop Demon Hunters, who here make their live-action feature debut, Youth Juice is billed as a creepy satire about aging and how far people will go to stop getting older. Check out a first-look still above.
“We wrote this during the pandemic, when we were both approaching 25, wasting away our youth indoors, going from miss to ma’am,” the scribes told Deadline. “At the time, it felt like a horror movie.”
The film is directed by Veronica Rodriguez (Disney’s upcoming Camp Rock 3) and follows Luna (Blaise) and Beni (Adlon), two best friends terrified of growing old who travel to Palm Springs to reclaim their vitality.
Rodriguez said she’s making “something sexy, funny, and scary” — “a film that’s both entertaining and unsettling, about the strange things people do to feel young.”
Rodriguez, Jimenez and McMechan are producing alongside Jorge Garcia Castro for Altered.LA; Pete Corona for Ruta Media; Will Russell-Shapiro; Stella Bulochnikov, Robin Rapino and Pat Lambert for Live Nation Studios; and Chris Abernathy and Eric B. Fleischman for The Wonder Company. Ryan Kroft and Michael Rapino are serving as exec producers.
Ryan Kroft, Live Nation Studios’ Head of Film & Television, told us, “We’re thrilled to be working with creatives who elevate pop culture. We are so impressed with Veronica’s provocative vision and stylistically disruptive choices as well as Danya and Hannah’s monumental work turning KPop Demon Hunters into a global phenomenon. Youth Juice is wildly entertaining, sharp in its point of view and completely original. It’s exactly the kind of artists-driven project we’re excited to champion as we continue to grow Live Nation Studios.”
Recently seen in the third and final season of HBO’s Euphoria, Adlon has also put in turns on shows like Ghosts and The Thing About Pam. She is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.
Blaise is best known for starring in Jurassic World: Rebirth, the supernatural drama Manifest for NBC/Netflix, and Fresh Off the Boat. She is repped by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Schreck Rose Dapello.
Rex stars alongside Tim Blake Nelson, Vera Farmiga and Jim Parsons in the Heaven’s Gate thriller The Leader, which just premiered to critical acclaim at Tribeca. Other recent film credits include Operation Taco Gary’s and Easy’s Waltz. He is repped by Buchwald and Range Media Partners.
Coming off of five seasons of Magnum P.I., Hernandez will be seen coming up in New Line’s The Revenge of La Llorona. He is repped by CAA, Alchemy Entertainment, and Fuller Law.
Known for work on the music docs Gaga: Five Foot Two and Moonage Daydream, as well as the Academy Award-winning A Star Is Born, Live Nation Studios’ upcoming scripted slate includes Stages; Nimrods, inspired by the early years of Green Day; and the festival comedy Rolling Loud starring Owen Wilson and Matt Rife.
Rodriguez is repped by Writ Large. Jimenez and McMechan are with WME, Mosaic, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.
