
EXCLUSIVE: We’ve learned that Oliver Stone‘s new movie White Lies has cast actress and social entrepreneur Stephanie Suganami.
She joins a cast that includes Josh Hartnett, Leila George, Michael Douglas, Willem Dafoe, Ellen Barkin, Homer Gere and Yvonne Chapman.
As we previously reported, it’s the first feature film for the three-time Oscar-winning Stone since 2016’s Snowden. He’s directing off his own screenplay that explores family, loss and pain and uncovers how love can change shape during our lifetimes.
White Lies is told across three generations, and follows Jack Freeman (Hartnett), a child of divorce now repeating his parents’ mistakes in his own marriage and with his own children. Feeling trapped, he embarks on a lust-filled journey to escape — only to find himself more lost than before. When he meets a woman whose life is the opposite of his own, he begins an unexpected journey on the path of rediscovery.
Suganami will play the role of Chika, a woman who gets to know Jack and his son, Joe.
Fernando Sulichin produces alongside Maximilien Arvelaiz and Jordan Gertner for Sulichin’s New Element Media. Tarak Ben Ammar and Gianluca Leurini of Eagle Pictures are executive producing with James Packer and Jose Luis Manzano.
Suganami previously starred in the A24 horror pic Opus opposite Ayo Edebiri, Amber Midthunder, Young Mazino, John Malkovich and Murray Bartlett, directed by Mark Anthony Green. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically in March last year. Other feature credits include the Amazon Studios and Hello Sunshine feature Something from Tiffany’s with Zoey Deutch and Shay Mitchell. She also starred Theater Is Dead, directed by Katherine Dudas, which had its premiere at Fantastic Fest.
On television, Suganami most recently was cast in Kenya Barris’ Hulu pilot Group Chat. She recurred in the latest season of Starz’s Power – Book II: Ghost opposite Michael Ealy in the role of Perla Tanaka. Other credits include the last season of the FX/Hulu series Dave, and Ryan Murphy’s network procedural Doctor Odyssey.
Outside of her film endeavors, Suganami. with close to 2 million followers, is a champion for global activism. She has partnered with prominent lifestyle brands such as American Express, Google, Kerastase and Bulgari.
Suganami co-founded the digital climate education platform @FutureEarth, and is an ambassador for The Environmental Working Group and John Kerry’s World War Zero climate change initiative. She also recently joined the board of Vice President Al Gore’s The Climate Reality Project and Los Angeles-based social service organization The People Concern.
