
MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Maasim, Sarangani, in Mindanao rose to 68 on Tuesday, while 33 people remain missing, according to disaster response authorities.
Based on the latest advisory from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) released Tuesday noon, as of 6 a.m. on June 16, most of the fatalities were recorded in Region XII, with Sarangani reporting 33 deaths and South Cotabato, 24. In Region XI, Davao Occidental recorded 10 deaths, while Davao del Sur recorded one.

Authorities said the quake affected around 338,000 families, or 1.38 million individuals, across Mindanao.

A total of 1,339 persons were reported ill or injured following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake.
Of these, 20 were reported ill, 18 injured, and 1,301 additional cases remain uncategorized as either ill or injured across the affected regions.
Meanwhile, infrastructure losses were estimated at P1.07 billion, while agricultural damage reached P29.8 million. /mcm

The Inquirer Foundation is calling for support for communities devastated by the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao.
In partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, the foundation is amplifying appeals for food, clean water and other critical assistance for affected families.

The Philippine Red Cross has activated its emergency fund campaign and deployed teams on the ground to provide medical services, distribute relief goods and extend psychosocial support to affected families.
