
MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Maasim, Sarangani in Mindanao has climbed to 78 on Thursday, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Based on NDRRMC’s data as of 6 a.m. on June 18, of the fatalities, 57 were 57 were recorded in Region XII, including 33 in Sarangani and 24 in South Cotabato, while Region XI reported 21 deaths, with 20 from Davao Occidental and one from Davao del Sur.
According to Diego Mariano, Information Officer from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), the increase from the previously reported 68 deaths was due to the retrieval of seven additional bodies and the confirmation of three previously listed as missing.

All 10 recorded deaths were from Davao Occidental, Mariano added.

Authorities now reported an updated 30 missing persons from the previous 33 and a total of 1,339 injured individuals.

The earthquake affected an estimated 357,000 families or 1.5 million individuals.
At least 5,000 families, equivalent to 21,900 persons, remain displaced and are currently staying in 47 evacuation centers.

A state of calamity remains in effect in 14 municipalities across Davao Occidental, Sarangani, and South Cotabato.
Meanwhile, total losses due to public infrastructure damage had been estimated at P1.29 billion.
