Over 200,000 PUV drivers receive cash aid in Calabarzon – DSWD

MANILA, Philippines — Over 200,000 public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers in Calabarzon have already received government cash aid amid rising fuel prices driven by the conflict in the Middle East, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said Tuesday.

According to the DSWD, a total of 227,306 PUV drivers in Calabarzon received P5,000 each under the Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport or “Uplift” framework.

Sourced from the DSWD’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program, a total of P1.136 billion was used to distribute the aid to 203,945 tricycle drivers, 13,689 jeepney drivers, and 9,672 service delivery riders across the region.

“The assistance was meant to ease the burden of high fuel costs on transport workers, who are among the hardest hit by the oil shock, and augment their income to support the needs of their families,” the DSWD said in a statement.

Aid for TNVS drivers in Cebu begins

Meanwhile, the DSWD in a separate statement announced the start of the distribution of cash relief assistance for Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) drivers in Central Visayas, also under the Uplift framework.

The DSWD said its regional office in Central Visayas targets to serve an initial 6,338 beneficiaries for the first day of the ongoing payout at the SM Seaside Cebu City Skyhall, with the distribution until June 18.

The department said it aims to cover a total of 32,149 Transport Network Company (TNC) and service delivery workers under Grab Philippines, which includes Moveit, Grab Express, and Grab My Taxi. /cb
