TACLOBAN CITY — More than 13,000 farmers and fisherfolk in Eastern Visayas have received over P30 million in financial assistance from the national government to help cushion the impact of rising fuel and production costs affecting the agriculture and fisheries sectors, the Department of Agriculture (DA)- 8 reported.
The assistance was distributed from June 8 to 11 under the Presidential Assistance for Farmers and Fisherfolk Program (PAFFP), benefiting 13,000 individuals across several municipalities in Leyte and Northern Samar.
According to DA-8, each beneficiary received P2,325 in direct cash assistance intended to provide immediate relief to agricultural and fishing communities facing increasing operational expenses.

The payout covered the municipalities of La Paz, MacArthur, Julita, Dagami, Burauen, Isabel, Palompon, Merida, and Kananga in Leyte, as well as Mapanas, Palapag, Gamay, and Lapinig in Northern Samar.
Recipients were selected from the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA), the government’s official database of farmers and fisherfolk, and were verified as actively engaged in agricultural and fisheries production.
DA said the financial assistance was released in response to the effects of the ongoing global oil supply concerns linked to tensions in the Middle East, which have contributed to higher fuel prices and increased production costs for farmers and fisherfolk.
The agency noted that rising fuel costs have affected the operation of farm machinery, irrigation systems, transportation of agricultural products, and fishing activities, placing additional pressure on rural livelihoods.

Beneficiaries welcomed the assistance, saying the cash aid would help cover household expenses, fuel costs, and other immediate needs while they continue their farming and fishing operations.
DA said the continued implementation of PAFFP demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable sectors and ensuring the sustainability of food production in the region.
