Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has joined the advisory board of Canadian mineral exploration firm NovaRed Mining, the company announced Tuesday.
Noem, who now serves as Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas, will work in a strategic advisory role as the company seeks to acquire and advance critical mineral exploration projects using its artificial intelligence-enhanced technology platform.
The company is focused on acquiring and developing copper-gold projects in British Columbia. Noem said she was drawn to NovaRed’s focus on critical minerals, which have become increasingly important to U.S. supply chains.
“I look forward to supporting the Company’s strategic objectives. In an increasingly competitive global environment, secure and reliable access to critical minerals has become an important economic and national security priority,” she said in a statement.
“NovaRed is pursuing opportunities in sectors that will remain important to long-term growth and supply-chain resilience, and I am excited to contribute my experience in public policy, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning as the Company advances its initiatives.”
The company pointed to her background in economic development, energy policy and experience working in government as factors that support its long-term growth strategy.
“Kristi brings exceptional leadership experience and a deep understanding of the policy, regulatory, and economic factors that influence infrastructure investment, resource development, and long-term economic growth,” NovaRed CEO Brian Goss said in a statement. “Her perspective and experience working across government and industry will be valuable as NovaRed advances its corporate development strategy and evaluates new opportunities.”
NovaRed said its appointment of Noem reflects a broader effort to build an advisory team consisting of people with “expertise across government, industry, capital markets, infrastructure, and resource development.”
The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.
The former cabinet official was fired from her role by President Trump earlier this year after months of controversy surrounding her tenure.
While her leadership was put on blast following the fatal shooting of two protestors by federal officers in Minneapolis, it was her eventual assertion at a Senate hearing that Trump approved a $220 million DHS advertising campaign to promote her that contributed to her ouster.
