Five people were killed on Tuesday afternoon after gunmen stormed a mining site in Gero village, Gyel District of Jos South LGA, Plateau State.
Residents said the incident occurred about 3 p.m., hours after an attack was reported at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, also in Jos South LGA.
Gero village is located 15-20 kilometres from NIPSS.
A resident, Ritiji Dalyop, who spoke to our correspondent, said the victims were engaged in mining activities when the attackers suddenly invaded the site and opened fire indiscriminately.
According to Dalyop, “five persons were shot dead by the gunmen.”
National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the attack.
The association alleged that the attack formed part of growing security threats in communities around the area and expressed concern over the safety of residents.
The statement further referenced an earlier reported attack around NIPSS, Kuru, which it resulted in the death of three security personnel.
The group called for urgent security intervention to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among affected communities.
Contacted the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Alabo Alfred, said he was not aware of the incident as he had not been briefed by officers from the area as of press time.
