Princewill Albert Akpan emerged champion of the 2026 Ibom Open Golf Tournament after three days of intense competition involving more than 350 golfers from Nigeria and several African countries in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Playing off a handicap of 16, Akpan returned an impressive net score of 67 to beat a strong field and lift the coveted trophy. His victory also earned him a return air ticket to a destination of his choice, courtesy of Uganda Airlines.
A total of 159 golfers made the cut for the championship round held at the prestigious Ibom Golf Course, regarded as one of the finest golfing facilities in West Africa.
Sponsored by Ship Afrika and 25 other corporate partners, the tournament attracted prominent personalities, including former Kogi State Governor Idris Wada, Director-General of the National Institute for Sports Philip Shaibu, Senators Bassey Albert and Anosike, former Minister Umana Umana, and former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Obong Nsima Ekere.
Despite complaints of dehydration caused by the scorching sun during Sunday’s final round, participants acknowledged that course conditions had improved significantly from the rain-affected opening days.
An elated Akpan, a businessman and member of Ibom Golf Club, expressed gratitude after succeeding defending champion Usenobong Akpabio. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anieti Udofia, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining the Ibom Golf Resort and the Arise Palm Golf Resort as leading tourism and sporting destinations.
Other winners included Tajudeen Saka of Elephant Cement Golf Club, Shagamu, who won the Super Veteran category; Nwachukwu Nduka of Ibom Golf Club, winner of the Veteran category; and Usenobong Akpabio and Patience Akpan, who claimed the Best Gross Men and Best Gross Ladies titles, respectively.
