The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has appointed and decorated Deacon Shola Mese (JP) as an Ambassador of the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) in recognition of his contributions to golf development and women’s empowerment initiatives.
Mese, who serves as Vice-Captain of Ogunu Golf Club, Warri, Delta State, and is the founder of the Shola Mese Foundation, received the honour during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja by LGAN President, Dr Lami Onayi Ahmed, and members of her delegation.
Speaking during the presentation, Dr Ahmed described the All Africa Challenge Trophy as one of the continent’s leading women’s golf championships and an important platform for promoting the game among women across Africa.
She disclosed that the 2026 edition of the tournament would take place in Abuja from November 2 to 7, with more than 30 countries expected to participate.
According to her, the championship would not only advance women’s golf but also boost tourism, encourage youth participation in sports and enhance Nigeria’s profile in international golf.
Explaining the rationale behind Mese’s appointment, Dr Ahmed said his commitment to the development of golf and support for women-focused initiatives made him a worthy choice.
“Deacon Shola Mese embodies excellence, leadership and dedication to the development of golf in Nigeria,” she said.
“His appointment as AACT Ambassador will inspire golfers, attract key stakeholders and strengthen Nigeria’s presence in continental golf competitions.”
Dr Ahmed further noted that preparations for the championship were progressing steadily with support from government institutions and private-sector partners.
“We are determined to deliver a world-class tournament that will showcase Nigeria’s hospitality, organisational capacity and passion for golf,” she said.
During the ceremony, LGAN also presented Mese with an Award of Appreciation in recognition of his role in golf development and women’s empowerment.
Responding, Mese thanked the association for the recognition and pledged his support towards ensuring a successful tournament.
“I am deeply honoured by this recognition. The development of golf, particularly women’s golf, deserves sustained investment, encouragement and strategic support,” he said.
Reflecting on his passion for supporting women, Mese paid tribute to his late mother.
“Women occupy a special place in my heart. I lost my mother, whom I loved dearly, and the values she instilled in me continue to inspire everything I do,” he said.
He also pledged to use his new role to promote the championship nationwide.
“I accept this responsibility with pride and humility. I will work closely with stakeholders to ensure that the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy is a successful and memorable event,” he added.
“The tournament offers a valuable platform to project Nigeria positively and inspire the next generation of golfers across the continent,” he said.
The 2026 AACT is expected to bring together some of Africa’s top female golfers in what is anticipated to be a landmark event for women’s golf and sports development in Nigeria.
