The Federal Government has distributed 11,720 bags of fertiliser to 2,930 smallholder farmers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity and enhance food security.
The Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, stated this yesterday during the national flag-off and formal handover of the fertilisers for distribution to beneficiaries under a programme organised by the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) at the Pavilion Centre, Garki, Abuja.
Mahmoud described the initiative as a timely intervention that underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
She said agriculture remains a critical pillar of national development, noting that investment in farmers translates to economic growth, food security and national prosperity.
The minister commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to transforming the agricultural sector through the Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the administration’s policies are empowering farmers and boosting local food production.
She also praised the NADF for supporting smallholder farmers, noting that access to quality fertiliser would increase crop yields and strengthen the resilience of farming communities across the FCT.
Mahmoud urged the 2,930 beneficiaries to make judicious use of the fertilisers and adopt modern farming practices to maximise productivity and contribute to national food sufficiency.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to partnering with relevant institutions and stakeholders to promote agricultural development through improved infrastructure, extension services, capacity building and enhanced market access.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of NADF, Engr. Mohammed Ibrahim, said the programme was another practical step towards achieving food security, increasing productivity and promoting inclusive economic growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to him, agriculture remains one of the strongest drivers of national development.
“When we get agriculture right, we create jobs, strengthen rural communities, improve food supply and put more value in the hands of farmers,” he said.
Ibrahim explained that the intervention was designed to ensure fertiliser reaches the right farmers at the right time, adding that the programme would help reduce production costs, improve access to quality inputs, increase yields per hectare and strengthen food supply across the country.
