A body discovered near the Albufeira inlet in Portugal’s Algarve is believed to be that of a 23-year-old British tourist who went missing while swimming last week.
The body was found yesterday evening after a fisherman raised the alarm at around 6.37pm, says a statement issued by the Portuguese Maritime Authority.
Emergency teams, including Portimão Maritime Police, firefighters from Albufeira Volunteer Fire Brigade and members of Albufeira’s municipal civil protection service, were dispatched to recover the body, and transport it to Albufeira Marina where official verification of death was registered.
Maritime Police officers, working alongside firefighters, recovered the body and transported it to Albufeira Marina, where an official verification of death was carried out.
The body is believed to be that of a 23-year-old British man who went missing last Thursday at Praia do Peneco, after going swimming with a younger friend, aged 19, who managed to get out of the water by his own means, and raise the alarm.
Search operations were launched, but two days of searches at sea failed to find any trace.
The formal identification process is continuing, but everything is pointing to the body being that of the missing British holidaymaker.
