MANILA, Philippines—Ateneo de Davao University retired Rene Baterbonia’s No. 2 jersey and renamed its senior high school covered court in honor of the late basketball standout.
The tributes were announced Monday, a week after Baterbonia died during Ateneo de Manila University’s team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

“In deeply moving tributes, Bobet’s jersey number has been officially retired, and the Ateneo de Davao University Senior High School Covered Court has been renamed the Rene “Bobet” Baterbonia Covered Court (RBBCC) in his honor,” wrote the school in a Facebook post.
“These are lasting testaments to a young man whose heart and talent left an indelible mark on everyone who watched him play.”

Baterbonia, 19, drowned during the Blue Eagles’ team-building activity in Aurora.Divine Adili, a foreign student-athlete for the Blue Eagles, also died in the incident.
Before joining Ateneo de Manila, Baterbonia starred for Ateneo de Davao and represented the Davao Region in the Palarong Pambansa.
The incoming rookie was expected to make his collegiate debut for the Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 89.
