The Italian society for the
protection of birds, LIPU, on Wednesday hailed Pope Leo XIV's
concern over a government bill that would make it easier to hunt
animals including the small birds that are a favourite target of
Italian hunters.
"It is with emotion and gratitude that we received the Pope's
response to our note of concern regarding Bill 1552 on hunting,"
said LIPU-BirdLife Italia, releasing a letter from the Vatican
Secretariat of State addressed to them.
Leo XIV, LIPU said, while emphasizing the Holy See's
unquestionable impartiality with respect to "legislative matters
of States," defined the issue as "a matter of great social and
moral importance," "praying that LIPU's legitimate wishes be
fulfilled."
The Pope, the statement continued, also assured that the Holy
See will not fail to promote "respect and protection of
creation."
