Drivers will no longer be able to access part of Alvor’s town centre during the afternoon and evening from Friday, June 19, as new traffic restrictions come into force aimed at making the village safer and more pedestrian-friendly.
The new “controlled access zone” will cover sections of Rua Dr. Frederico Ramos Mendes and Rua Marquês de Pombal, with vehicle access permitted only between 7am and 12.30pm for loading and unloading operations.
Outside those hours, the area will be reserved for pedestrians, although emergency vehicles and other authorised traffic will still be allowed access.
The restrictions apply to Rua Dr. Frederico Ramos Mendes and the section of Rua Marquês de Pombal between its junction with Rua D. João II and the intersection with Rua D. Sancho I and Rua de São João.
Access will be controlled by automatic bollards installed at the entrances and exit to the zone. The bollards will rise automatically at 12.30pm each day and remain in place until 7am the following morning, when they will retract to allow the authorised access period to begin.
Motorists are being reminded to follow the signage in place and not to attempt to pass more than one vehicle through the system during each opening cycle.
The measure is being introduced by Portimão municipal council, Alvor parish council and municipal company EMARP, which say it will help create a safer and more comfortable environment for both residents and visitors.
The change comes as Alvor enters its busiest period of the year, with thousands of tourists expected to visit the village over the summer months.
Authorities have thanked residents, businesses and visitors for their cooperation and say the new arrangements will help improve safety and the overall experience of the village centre.
